Milton Keynes Ladies' Charity Table Tennis Tournament: 14 Women, £650 and a Community Lesson

On September 6, Milton Keynes Table Tennis Centre in the United Kingdom held its second annual ladies' charity table tennis tournament. There were no professional rankings and no large prize money, but 14 women produced a memorable community result: £650 raised for Breast Cancer Now and more than 100 bras collected and sent to Against Breast Cancer for recycling. The event was organised by Julie Snowdon, a Table Tennis England staff member and secretary of the centre. Most of the players came from the monthly ladies-only table tennis sessions run by the centre, so the tournament was not simply a competition but also a bridge to encourage women to keep playing regularly. In terms of format, the event used two group rounds leading to a main draw and a consolation final. This structure suits a community tournament: it ensures participants play several matches, reduces early elimination, and keeps the focus on fun and fair play. The emphasis was not on technical skill or tactics but on participation. Based on my experience following table tennis, what stands out to me most is not the sport itself but the event design. Collecting bras at the tournament turned players into advocates for breast cancer awareness, rather than passive listeners. That is a meaningful approach that does not require a huge budget. What may be unexpected is that a tournament with only 14 women and no professional athletes can still have real impact. Its small scale helps women new to table tennis feel safe. The next ladies' session will take place at 10 AM on November 1. If this model continues, Milton Keynes could serve as an example for Vietnamese table tennis centres hoping to build women's sports communities through charity.
