Hamilton calls for Ferrari rules of engagement after Leclerc clash at Monza

At Ferrari’s home round in Monza, the team ended with a forgettable day when Charles Leclerc crashed out and Lewis Hamilton could only finish sixth, outside the top five. Hamilton warned that the Italian team must set clear internal rules if it does not want to hurt its title bid. The former world champion started fourth, while teammate Leclerc started third. In the first battle at Turn 2, Hamilton was pushed off track and lost several places. Later, Leclerc himself crashed and retired. After the restart, Hamilton managed to climb only to sixth. “I was ahead at Turn 2. At the apex, I was still ahead. There is no ‘both of us’ in that. It was really bad for the team,” Hamilton said. Hamilton insisted he always races cleanly and leaves space. But he believes Ferrari gives no precise guidance on how drivers should fight each other. He pointed at team principal Fred Vasseur: “Everything starts with Fred and then goes down. You can only say, insist or shout so much from above. We have to review how we communicate.” Hamilton recalled his fierce battles with Nico Rosberg at Mercedes. Back then, Mercedes had written rules of engagement, so most internal fights stayed acceptable. “Here, there are no rules. And that is something we have to change,” he concluded. If Ferrari does not establish boundaries soon, two ambitious drivers may keep costing the team points in decisive races. For a big team, managing internal rivalry is not just about points, but also about brand image.
